On Thursday evening, Boulder County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to the scene of a grass fire near the Town of Superior, which was swiftly handled by Mountain View Fire Rescue. The incident occurred on the south side of US Highway 36, near the 45-mile marker, adjacent to the Saddlebrooke at Rock Creek complex. A transient encampment nearby led authorities to a suspect, now in custody.
The fire, which spanned about a quarter acre, was no match for the responding fire personnel who contained and extinguished it without further incident. It is the small blessings, such as the quick response of emergency services, that prevent potential disaster. Following an investigation, the fire was traced back to the nearby encampment, where deputies believe a discarded cigarette was to blame.
According to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Alexander Seidel, a 37-year-old man associated with the encampment, was arrested and is facing one count of Fourth Degree Arson, a Class 5 Felony. If convicted, Seidel could face serious penalties, an outcome that highlights the grave consequences of negligence with fire in vulnerable environments.
