Duffy. This funding package is part of the Small Shipyard Grant program, a critical initiative for the development and application of new technologies, advanced training, and workforce development that is essential in strengthening the nation's shipbuilding and repair capabilities.
In a move to directly counter Chinese maritime competition and enhance national security, Secretary Duffy asserted, “President Trump’s plan to reclaim maritime dominance starts with rebuilding America’s shipyards.” He further elaborated that the program aims to not only boost economic strength but also to "to quickly build big, beautiful ships again" to maintain freedom on the seas, according to a statement obtained by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Acting Maritime Administrator Sang Yi joined in the announcement, highlighting the program’s importance for spurring innovation and job creation within the maritime industry. He emphasized the essential role of the Small Shipyard Grant program in revitalizing the American maritime industry, saying, “Unleashing the full power of America's shipyards will boost our economic strength and national security.”
Since its beginning in 2008, the Small Shipyard Grant program has been a notable contributor to the maritime industry, with 382 grants amounting to $320.5 million being awarded to qualified small shipyard facilities. The current announcement lists 17 recipients from 12 different states, a testament to the wide-reaching impact of the initiative. Small shipyards employ more than 100,000 Americans and serve as a strategic asset critical to both national security and economic vitality, by making possible everything from custom vessel development to specialized repair services.
