A UC graduate is set to bring a fresh perspective to rural Taiwan as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) starting this August. The student, identified as Li, aged 22, will be tasked with teaching English to young learners ranging from elementary to high school, while also serving as a cultural ambassador for the United States. This opportunity stems from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which celebrates individuals who showcase strong academic merit, leadership potential, and a dedication to fostering international understanding.
"I've been counting down the days," Li told the UC News publication. "It's a mix of both excitement and a little anxiety, but I'm ready to learn and embrace what's different and unique about Taiwan." Li's journey to secure his place among the ranks of Fulbright grantees was supported by UC's Office of Nationally Competitive Awards (NCA), which helps students to prepare for such prestigious fellowships thoroughly.
Moreover, the NCA at UC has not only supported Li but also ushered seven UC applicants this year to be offered Fulbright grants. These grants cover a range of pursuits, including research, graduate studies, and English teaching projects. "UC is attracting outstanding students and providing them with the kinds of opportunities and experiences that prepare them to be competitive at the highest levels for impressive awards like Fulbright," claimed Jenny Hyest, PhD, director of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards, in the same UC News release.
