The Utah Department of Transportation has warned of hefty delays on Sunday, July 6, especially if you're returning from celebrating Independence Day. According to UDOT, travelers can expect to sit in traffic for up to an additional 50 minutes between 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on that day. Peak congestion is anticipated between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., when US-6 narrows down to one lane near Wellington to safely harbor the work zone.
UDOT's advice comes not only to inform but also to urge travelers to consider alternate plans or start times to bluntly avoid the rush. While construction crews will lay off the road for the holiday, previous arrangements causing the lane restrictions will remain steadfast. It's crucial to note that despite pausing the construction, the site safety protocols dictate maintaining the current traffic pattern, a potential bottleneck for holiday returnees.
It's not only US-6 feeling the squeeze. UDOT has flagged several parts of Interstate 15 for potential slowdowns. Come July 3, southbound I-15 in Salt Lake County could add up to 10 minutes to travel times from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Northbound travelers will face similar slowdowns in Salt Lake and Davis Counties. However, UDOT has extended some relief: most projects across the state will halt construction and open all lanes during the holiday weekend where feasible. Yet, for continued safety, certain restrictions must stay in place.
