Vernors, amid the sweltering heat of summer, is rolling out a new beverage that pays homage to a historic Michigan tradition. The specialty drink, known as the Vernors Boston Cooler, combines the brand's hallmark ginger flavor with a creamy vanilla essence, designed to hark back to the classic ice cream float vibe that many residents grew up with. Originally deriving from the Detroit area, this nostalgic concoction can be savored on its own or used to create a time-honored float when poured over ice cream.
As reported by CBS Detroit, the beverage's name, "Boston Cooler," was trademarked for a ginger ale ice cream bar by Vernors in 1967, though the origins of the treat's name remain obscure. Available through the summer months until September, thirsty consumers can find the limited-edition flavor in various formats, including 12-pack cans, 2-liter bottles, and 20-ounce bottles — but solely in Michigan and Toledo, Ohio, areas where Vernors is traditionally sold.
Highlighting the public's penchant for new flavors, Kevin Schmitz, Director of Brand Marketing at Keurig Dr Pepper - the parent company of Vernors - underscored consumer trends uncovered in the company's recent "State of Beverages 2025 Trend Report," which found a significant portion of Americans eager to try new beverages. According to a statement obtained by Audacy, "On average, 44% of Americans try new beverages each month, with even higher interest among younger adults." Schmitz notes this "growing appetite for variety" as a driving force behind the new flavor launch.
This sentiment was echoed in comments to WXYZ, with Schmitz saying, "When the chance came to bottle the legendary Boston Cooler, we jumped on it faster than a Michigander spotting the first signs of spring after a long winter." The launch of the Vernors Boston Cooler aims to satisfy a wide range of tastes while tapping into the region's fond memories of summer traditions and enjoying a sweet, fizzy treat on a hot day.
