Donald Carl Held, a 50-year-old Warren County resident, has entered a guilty plea on charges related to child sexual abuse material (CSAM). In a federal courtroom in St. Louis, Held acknowledged his guilt to one count each of receiving and distributing child pornography. According to information from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Missouri, Held's case unfolded after he unknowingly shared explicit photos with an undercover agent affiliated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
During the investigation by HSI in collaboration with the St. Charles County Police Department, a March 4, 2024 search of Held's home led to the discovery of electronic devices laden with CSAM. He confessed to daily distribution of such material to online parties via a messaging application known as Teleguard, according to the details shared by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Yet, he claimed he fabricated stories about engaging in sexual acts with a purported 15-year-old girl.
The probe revealed Held's mobile phone contained over a thousand illicit images and videos. Additionally, his accounts on both Teleguard and Telegram were fraught with "extensive" communications, where he and various individuals exchanged and encouraged the circulation of CSAM. Held is reported to have shared advice on evading law enforcement detection with others in the network. This information was detailed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in their official statement.
For his crimes, Held is slated for sentencing on October 27, and he could face up to 20 years in prison per charge. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Hayes, is leading the prosecution in a case that represents a fragment of the broader struggle against the online exploitation of children.
