David M. Toepfer, a seasoned prosecutor from Warren, has been officially sworn in as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, assuming the role of the region's top federal law enforcement official. Swearing-in duties were performed by Chief U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi at the U.S. Courthouse in Akron, an event following his July 23 appointment by U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi. Toepfer now represents the United States in federal and civil litigation within the district.
President Donald J. Trump had put forward Toepfer's name for this significant position, and while awaiting confirmation by the U.S. Senate, Toepfer has pledged to fully engage in the mission of law enforcement. "It is the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Northern Ohio in this role. Our office will continue working with our federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to protect the public by aggressively enforcing the laws of the United States," Toepfer stated, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice. His dedication to law enforcement is clear, with nearly three decades under his belt, including a diverse portfolio of federal criminal case prosecutions.
The Northern District of Ohio, now under Toepfer's watch, spans 40 counties and is home to around six million residents. With offices in Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, and Youngstown, Toepfer will supervise a team of close to 200 attorneys and support personnel. His extensive background includes various leadership roles within the U.S. Attorney’s Office and prior positions as a prosecuting attorney in multiple Ohio counties, as highlighted in his biography on the Department of Justice's website.
Throughout his career, Toepfer has been recognized for his efforts in the fight against crime, having received the Director’s Award from the Department of Justice in 2010. This honor was bestowed for his work leading the Violence and Gun Reduction Interdiction Program, a successful initiative targeting violent firearm crimes in Youngstown and Warren. "I am thankful for the trust President Trump and Attorney General Bondi have placed in me, and for the support of Senators Moreno and Husted as the confirmation process proceeds through the Senate," Toepfer expressed, in a statement obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice, signaling his readiness to uphold the duties of his new role.
With a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Youngstown State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Akron School of Law, Toepfer brings a unique blend of academic and practical experience to the table. As noted in the U.S. Department of Justice announcement, his appointment is especially significant, as it marks over a century since a Youngstown-area lawyer last held the U.S. Attorney post for this district.
