David Oday Smith, a 39-year-old resident of the District of Columbia, faces federal charges for unlawful firearm possession, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and law enforcement officials. Smith, with prior felony convictions, was indicted as part of the "Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful" initiative, which falls under a broader effort to combat gun violence in Washington, D.C.
On July 14, members of the Metropolitan Police Department spotted Smith with a black satchel, acting suspiciously behind a bus stop on Georgia Avenue Northwest. When approached by officers, Smith abandoned the satchel which was later found to contain a loaded Glock 27 .40 caliber pistol. The indictment, unsealed in the U.S. District Court, charges Smith with a single count of possessing a firearm and ammo as an felon.
"Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful" is a law enforcement movement, reinforcing President Trump's executive order, focusing on stricter penalties for gun-related offenses. Details regarding this initiative were outlined in the indictment and aim to address the persistent issue of gun violence that plagues D.C.'s streets.
The case against Smith is being handled by the ATF Washington Field Office and the MPD, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David B. Liss leading the prosecution. As with all indictments, Smith is considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court. The case once again spotlights the continuous effort by law enforcement to prioritize federal firearms violations in hopes of making the nation's capital a safer place for its residents.
