Two separate shooting incidents occurred over the weekend at NYCHA developments in Brooklyn. According to Gothamist, a 22-year-old man was critically shot in the head and another 40-year-old man sustained a leg injury at Kingsborough Houses in Crown Heights last night. Both victims received prompt medical attention, with the former being taken to Kings County Hospital and remaining in the ICU as of this morning.
Meanwhile, a shooting occurred at Lafayette Gardens last Saturday night, resulting in the death of 27-year-old Jahshyim Whitfield, a father of two. The incident took place shortly after he had dropped his daughter off nearby for a hair appointment. According to a statement obtained by the New York Daily News, his aunt commented on his death, saying, "He took his daughter to get her hair done, he had dropped her off and as he waiting for her hair to get finished that’s when the incident happened." It was reported that Whitfield had a history involving gang-related charges back in 2016, but no state prison record was found, and no arrests have been made in connection to his shooting.
Police are actively seeking suspects and motives in these recent shootings, which come amid a general decline in violent incidents in the area. As per NYPD data mentioned by Gothamist, the city has witnessed a notable 23% decrease in shootings citywide and a 27% reduction in homicides compared to the previous year.
