A tragic incident unfolded in Portland's Pleasant Valley neighborhood last Saturday afternoon, when a woman was fatally stabbed in a residence on Southeast 143rd Court. Portland Police Bureau officers arrived around 12:30 p.m. to discover the adult female deceased at the scene; simultaneously, five children were present in the home during the ordeal, and they were evacuated unharmed, elaborated Sergeant Kevin Allen, according to KATU News.
In an urgent response to the potential threat, the Portland Police apprehended a man in Vancouver, as noted by KPTV, where fear that the suspect could either still be in the residence or that other victims might be involved prompted the call for tactical units and a negotiation team to the area. Meanwhile, KATU News reported that the children, all under the age of six, were being cared for and connected with family members with the help of victim services, Sergeant Allen affirming, "My understanding is they're fine physically."
Concern for the larger community safety led authorities to escalate their response, which was evidenced as the Portland Police established a perimeter spanning several blocks of the Pleasant Valley area, a detail provided by KOIN 6 News. In this effort, special teams including SERT (Special Emergency Reaction Team) and Crisis Negotiation Teams were summoned to mitigate any further risk.
Local resources have been mobilized to support the children caught in the incident, with a police officer stressing that their well-being comes first. KATU News highlighted this, quoting, "They’re our top priority right now to make sure that they’re safe and cared for." Investigations into the stabbing are still ongoing as officials try to understand what happened.
