A tragic event has unfolded at a Goodyear construction site, where a worker has been confirmed dead after a trench incident. Fox10 Phoenix reports that the Goodyear Fire Department is now conducting a recovery operation, having initially responded to the site at around 1:10 p.m. on the unfortunate day. The worker, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, was reportedly trapped in a trench at the intersection of 183rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.
Initial rescue efforts were abandoned due to unstable ground conditions and safety time constraints that eventually transitioned the mission into a recovery. As stated by Goodyear Fire in an earlier release, "Rescue crews attempted to rescue the individual but due to the unsteady ground and time allotted, rescue measures were put on a hold, and we are now in recovery mode." Crews have not been able to physically make contact with the deceased due to ongoing challenging conditions, the specifics of which were not detailed in their statements.
In a related development, ABC15 notes that the incident occurred near Citrus and Lower Buckeye roads, where the worker was trapped under dirt in a 6-foot-deep hole. Co-workers were seen using their equipment in a desperate bid to dig out the trapped man when emergency services arrived on the scene.
Complications arose during the rescue attempt when additional dirt began to collapse into the hole, even as fire and police personnel joined the effort to safely recover the man. The presence of sensitive infrastructure, such as gas lines, further hampered efforts and eventually necessitated a shift to purely focus to recovery. Currently, crews continue to work into the night to dig and recover the body in what has spiraled down into a situation requiring both delicacy and urgency.
This story is still developing, and more updates are expected as recovery operations proceed.
