Diners at El Torito restaurant in Marina del Rey got more than they bargained for on Saturday afternoon as a yacht, suffering from a mechanical failure, struck the seawall just before the clock struck 3 p.m. The harrowing incident unfolded near the establishment, startling those inside, but no injuries have been reported. ABC7 captured video of the crash, showing the mid-size yacht careening towards the concrete barrier as onlookers recorded the sudden impact.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the yacht suffered an "internal mechanical failure" that compromised steering control, this prompted the skipper to aim for the seawall at Fisherman's Village off Fiji Way, a decision that Lt. N. Guskos of the Marina del Rey Sheriff's Station commended as the "right thing to do" to prevent further harm or possible injuries. The vessel, which incurred significant damage on its bow was eventually towed away, punctuating an afternoon of alarm and unexpected spectacle.
The FOX LA report described damage to the sea wall as minimal compared to the yacht's bow, underlining the effectiveness of the skipper's swift maneuver. Meanwhile, eyewitness Eric Garcia, quoted by ABC7, expressed his disbelief, saying, "I've never seen anything like this. I was shocked," and hailed the captain as a hero for his decisive actions that avoided what could have been a more catastrophic event.
As patrons of nearby restaurants looked on, Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded to assess the aftermath of the collision, downgrading the emergency as there were no medical needs for those aboard the yacht. The cause of the mechanical failure leading up to the crash remains under investigation, as reported by Palisades News.
