In a significant surge of law enforcement activity, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona has charged 161 individuals with various immigration-related crimes over the past week, according to a public release from the Department of Justice. These offenses ranged from illegally re-entering the United States to smuggling activities that exacerbate the challenge of unlawful immigration.
The crackdown comes as part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to target illegal immigration and dismantle the operations of cartels. The cases filed included 79 counts of illegal re-entry and 71 counts of first-time unlawful entry, with an additional 11 individuals implicated in smuggling aliens across Arizona. The cases were brought forth with the backing of an array of federal partners such as ICE, Border Patrol, and the FBI, among others. In highlighting the week's events, authorities pointed out specific individuals, including Isidro Calleros-Sotelo, who was charged with re-entry after removal, and Mario Alberto Rodriguez-Herrera, who faced charges for transporting an illegal alien and visa fraud after misleading law enforcement about his immigration status with a fraudulent LAPR card, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Arizona.
Another notable case was that of Ricardo Daniel Villalobos-Cardenas, charged with his role in alien smuggling, alleged to be the caretaker of a stash house and involved in transporting undocumented individuals within the state. The release further clarifies that while these charges are serious accusations, all defendants maintain their right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.
