A 19-year-old woman is in critical condition after a motorcycle accident early this morning on the H1 Freeway. According to KHON2, the crash occurred at 12:27 am in the eastbound lanes near the Vineyard off-ramp in Kalihi. The Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division reported that the young motorcyclist was speeding when she sideswiped a vehicle holding a 28-year-old male driver and his 29-year-old female passenger.
The impact caused the motorcyclist to be ejected from her bike, and she was subsequently transported to the hospital in critical condition. The occupants of the vehicle involved were not injured and remained at the scene following the crash. It was noted by officials that the female motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, an important factor that may have potentially mitigated even more severe injuries.
Separately, KITV adds that paramedics responded to the accident shortly after it occurred at 12:48 a.m. The 19-year-old woman was treated at the scene near Downtown Honolulu before being taken to an emergency room in serious condition. It was not immediately clear from this report whether the helmet was being worn, a detail later confirmed by the HPD.
An ongoing investigation into the events leading up to the crash is currently being conducted by the HPD's Vehicular Homicide Section.
