A 21-year-old man was fatally injured early Thursday morning, August 14th, in Riverton, when his e-bike was struck by a utility vehicle, which, according to authorities, failed to stop at a red light. The incident occurred just before 6 a.m. at the junction of 1300 West and 12600 South, as reported by KSL.com. The young man, identified as Owen Thomsen, was taken in serious condition to the hospital, where he died shortly after his arrival.
As obtained by KSLTV, Riverton Police Public Information Officer Joshua Lee confirmed that the driver of the utility vehicle was an adult male who, along with a female passenger, remained on the scene and is cooperating with the police. The severity of the collision was such that the e-bike, which is not designed for street use, came to rest 186 feet from the crosswalk where the collision occurred.
"It's highly likely, given the evidence that we have, that white utility vehicle was going a high speed," Lee revealed in an interview with KSL.com. Police officials are underscoring the increased number of accidents involving e-bikes and other non-street legal vehicles, emphasizing the need for adherence to safety protocols, including dismounting and pushing the vehicles across crosswalks.
No arrests have been made thus far as the investigation continues. However, the implication of high speeds contributing to the deadly outcome has been noted. Thomsen, who was thrown more than 180 feet as a result of the impact, succumbed to his injuries shortly upon arrival at the hospital, as described in coverage by FOX13. This fatality highlights the increasing concerns surrounding safety and the operation of e-motorcycles and similar vehicles in urban traffic environments.
