A tragic boating incident has claimed the life of a Nashville man on Percy Priest Lake last Saturday. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has identified the victim as David Holcroft, 74, in reports confirmed by multiple local news outlets. Holcroft, alongside his wife, was sailing on the lake when he fell overboard after their vessel was suddenly struck by waves.
The WSMV detailed that Holcroft was performing adjustments to the sailboat near the bow at the time of the incident, which occurred around 2 p.m. near the Hamilton Creek area, and as the boat rocked from the impact of the water, he was thrown overboard, and nearby boaters who overheard the shouts for help sprang into action but it was TWRA officers who were swift to arrive at the scene and retrieve the unresponsive man from the water. Officers administered CPR before Holcroft was transported to TriStar Summit Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
It has been noted by the TWRA, as reported by Fox17, that at the time of the accident, Holcroft was not wearing a personal flotation device (PFD), a crucial safety measure while on the water. This case marks the state’s 17th boating-related fatality this year, indicating a troubling trend of water safety concerns in the area.
In response to the incident, the TWRA emphasized in a statement the importance of life jackets, stating, "wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is the most effective way to prevent drowning during boating incidents," as per information obtained by WKRN. The investigation into the exact circumstances of Holcroft’s fall and the subsequent response efforts remains active, with authorities seeking to understand fully and hopefully prevent such occurrences in the future.
