In a solemn conclusion to a tragic case, Denzel Pope, aged 20, received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 30 years for the murder of 24-year-old Akron mother Paige Calich, as reported by KTVZ. The sentencing took place in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas, where Judge Christine Croce characterized Pope as "a true danger to society."
Calich was fatally shot on her porch, with her 3-year-old son present, at their Socrates Place home on July 28, 2024, a scene Akron police discovered upon their arrival, FOX8 details that she was found with multiple gunshot wounds and, although transported to the hospital she ultimately succumbed to her injuries, the saga that unfolded stems from an earlier altercation involving Calich and Pope's sister, Corvette Pope. Subsequent to the incident, Denzel was later apprehended in Chicago while his sister plea guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and obstructing justice.
Pope was convicted on a slew of charges, including two counts of murder with a firearm specification, two counts of felonious assault with a firearm specification, and one count of having weapons while under disability, as described by News 5 Cleveland. During the emotional sentencing, family friends of the victim expressed their anguish, with Chelsea Jones revealing the depth of their torment in a statement obtained by KTVZ, saying she's "caught in a nightmare she can’t wake up from."
Corvette Pope, Denzel's 26-year-old sister, received a sentence ranging from 5 to 7 and a half years for her part in the events leading to Calich's death and the Summit County Prosecutor's Office voiced hope that the sentencing would offer some measure of solace to the Calich family, as Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich was quoted by FOX8, saying "There is no excuse for the act that ended Paige Calich’s life and robbed her young children of their mother", while nothing can restore the life so cruelly taken, the pursuit of justice has assuredly reached its necessary, though somber, finale.
