An investigation is underway following the death of 32-year-old Allan F. Tucker III of Woodbridge, Virginia, who died in police custody in Alexandria after being arrested for public intoxication.

According to FOX 5 DC, officers responded around 5:07 p.m. Friday to reports of a man running and yelling through an apartment complex in the 2800 block of N. Beauregard Street. Police said Tucker was taken into custody after attempts to de-escalate the situation and was transported to the Alexandria Adult Detention Center.

DC News Now reported that Tucker later required medical assistance at the facility. Officers and medical staff attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead.

The Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death. WJLA reported that the regional Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation, while the Alexandria Police Department’s Office of Professional Accountability is conducting an internal review. An independent investigation will also be carried out by the city’s Independent Police Auditor.
