Eleven individuals found themselves rescued from the gripping fate of a sinking fishing boat late Wednesday night in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. According to ABC7NY, the vessel began to take on water while moored at Pier 1 shortly before 9:30 p.m. Emergency services moved quickly, constructing a makeshift bridge with rescue equipment and safely guiding all passengers off the faltering boat.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by the presence of both NYPD and FDNY officials, including the NYPD Harbor Unit. A 911 call precipitated their rapid response, and the New York Post reported that dramatic images from the scene showed the white boat’s descent into the waters of Sheepshead Bay as first responders worked against the tide of circumstance. Despite the potential for tragedy, officials confirmed the safe evacuation of all individuals involved, and no injuries were reported.
However, the situation did necessitate medical attention for one individual, as seen in photographs where the person was taken by ambulance to Coney Island Hospital. The nature of the individual's distress, and the precise reasons behind the medical response remain unclear, as does the cause of the vessel's untimely intake of water. The boat was last seen stabilized, yet partially submerged at the pier, with plans for its extraction set for the following day.
The investigation into the cause of this maritime misfortune is ongoing.
