Apalachee High School Wildcats ended a long losing streak with a decisive 29–6 victory over the Chattahoochee Cougars last Saturday, marking their first win since 2021 and a major morale boost for the team.
In a photo that's been served up across social feeds with the cheeky caption "What streak?", we saw the Wildcats break into a revelry seldom seen in recent times. The victory, as captured in an image spread by FOX 5 Atlanta, not only erases a nearly 30-game losing streak, but it also christens Kevin Saunders’ tenure as head coach on a high note.
On the back of their win, the Wildcats now steel themselves for their next bout with Cherokee Bluff High School this Friday. As the school approaches the somber one-year anniversary of last year’s campus shooting on September 4, a focus on recovery and remembrance continues. In response, the school has added three full-time therapy dogs, upgraded security measures, and created relaxation rooms to help ease students’ stress, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The atmosphere has undeniably shifted at the high school, with palpable talk of healing and resilience. Lexi Jackson, an Apalachee parent whose daughter was present during the tragic events, shared with Atlanta News First, "There's still a difference in the air and I guess it forever will be, and time will heal that, but you still get the positivity of kids still getting to be kids."
With the area around J-Hall to remain shuttered through the year as part of ongoing memorials, it's grassroots moments like these that erect stones of hope. “Your life means something. It matters and make the most of every single day that you have because, as you can see, it can be over in a matter of seconds,” Jackson further remarked to Atlanta News First.
