The Arizona Attorney General's Office is investigating the death of 75-year-old Linda Hughes, who was found unresponsive at the Silver Birch of Avondale assisted living facility. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet determined the cause of death, but authorities said Hughes was exposed to temperatures that reached 102 degrees that day, according to ABC15.
On July 21, police found Hughes after he reportedly entered a ramada from a door inside the facility and may have been outside for up to two hours. Silver Birch of Avondale released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our beloved residents at Silver Birch of Avondale. Out of respect for the privacy of the individual and their family, we are unable to share any additional details at this time," as reported by AZFamily.
In 2023, Arizona reported more than 600 heat-related deaths, the highest on record, with the elderly especially affected due to health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Following a recent incident at Silver Birch of Avondale, the Arizona Department of Health Services is reviewing the facility’s compliance with health and safety rules. Silver Birch stated, “We have policies and procedures in place designed to ensure a safe and supportive environment,” as mentioned by AZFamily. Families with concerns about loved ones in long-term care are encouraged to contact Arizona Department of Health Services.
