Attorney General Kris Mayes testified against the EPA’s proposal to repeal the 2009 Endangerment Finding and existing vehicle emission standards, citing the impacts of climate change on Arizona.
According to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, Mayes pointed to rising heat-related deaths, which have increased tenfold in the past 20 years, as well as recent wildfires and record-breaking heat waves. These findings are supported by research from sources including Slade Smith et al. and the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Mayes stated that Arizona’s hotter, drier conditions are being driven by climate change and argued that the EPA has a legal obligation to consider the costs of climate change using peer-reviewed methods. He warned that repealing current protections could lead to significant health and environmental consequences, especially in states already experiencing severe climate impacts.
