A standoff between law enforcement and an armed male suspect at an Arleta home in Los Angeles continued through Monday morning. According to KTLA, the incident was sparked after the suspected man, who was recently discharged from the hospital following an overdose, began threatening family members with a firearm. He has since barricaded himself inside the residence. The call came in around 1 a.m. on Monday, and the individual has been observed with multiple firearms but did not indicate a willingness to surrender.
Beachy Avenue Elementary School, located proximately to the scene on Gruen Street, near Beachy Avenue, was forced to close for the day. The Los Angeles Unified School District directed students and staff in a statement to relocate temporarily to Canterbury Elementary School, where mental health support would be available on-site, as per CBS News Los Angeles. SWAT officers arrived to support local police around 4 a.m., signaling an escalation in response to the unfolding situation.
The suspect had remained in the home as of 10 a.m., continuing to defy officers' commands even after a round of tear gas was deployed, as reported by KTLA 5. Authorities have closed off the area near Beachy Avenue and Gruen Street due to the incident.
