Tragedy struck Astoria, Queens, on a seemingly ordinary Tuesday morning when three lives were taken in a chaotic crash involving a food truck. The NYPD says that an elderly driver, operating a 2010 Toyota Corolla, collided with two pedestrians near the intersection of 19th Avenue and 42nd Street, before making unintended contact with another vehicle, as reported by Gothamist.
Detailed accounts of the accident indicate that at approximately 8:30 a.m., the 84-year-old driver of the Corolla lost control of his vehicle, striking the pedestrians and subsequently crashing into a Volvo sedan, the Volvo's driver was left unscathed despite the gravity of the incident, although police have not identified what led to the driver losing control, leading to the Corolla careening in a manner with such devastating results.
NBC New York's coverage shows a bird's eye view of the aftermath, captured by Chopper 4, revealing the extensive debris and the severe impact this collision had on the streetscape. Two men, ages 42 and 70, involved in the crash were found in critical condition; one declared dead at the scene while the other, along with the elderly driver, later died at Elmhurst Hospital.
Despite the NYPD's ongoing investigation, no arrests have been reported at this time, as details of the crash continue to emerge.
