Atlantic Beach homeowners have an opportunity to green their landscapes - for free. The city has launched a program where residents can apply to receive up to two trees annually, aimed at bolstering the local tree canopy. Interested property owners have until September 26, to get their applications in, as per the City of Atlantic Beach's announcement.
Fueling this initiative is the City's tree mitigation fund, furnishing a variety of species for beautification and environmental betterment. Among the prospective greenery are Maples, Bald Cypresses, Live Oaks, and Southern Magnolias. Once an application is approved, the city will, plant the tree for the applicant, ensuring the location is free of restrictions.
It’s a straightforward process: verify ownership within Atlantic Beach, select a front yard or, if applicable, a side yard adjacent to public pathways, and choose your preferred tree. The city takes care of the rest by contracting professional planters to install the new trees, as outlined in the program guidelines.
What is essentially a civic giveaway, this program aims to enhance both private properties and public spaces through concerted urban forestry efforts. It's a practical step towards improving the city's environmental health. "All you need to do is apply, pick a location in the front yard, and love their tree," according to the City of Atlantic Beach's official statement.
