A potential school shooting in Washington, D.C., has been thwarted thanks to swift law enforcement collaboration. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), alongside the Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD), arrested a 16-year-old IDEA Public Charter School student on Wednesday night following alarming social media activity that indicated a violent threat against an unspecified school, as reported by FOX 5.
In the raid, law enforcement found seven firearms and a large-capacity feeding device at the juvenile's residence. The arrest was made on suspicion of several charges, including threats to kidnap and injure, possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition, and receiving stolen property. A chilling Instagram post, now removed, depicted an individual holding a firearm with a caption that potentially signaled an imminent threat to a school, prompting the swift reaction from authorities. This concerning visual was further described by NBC Washington, which detailed that the image contained blood coming out of the barrel, accompanied by the words "Omw 2 school."
The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, lauded the actions of law enforcement under the current administration. "This was a juvenile who was a risk to not just himself, but the community here in Washington," Leavitt said in a comment to FOX 5, emphasizing the importance of the timely intervention.
Additional praise for the law enforcement's quick work came from Metro General Manager Randy Clarke and Attorney General Pam Bondi. Clarke highlighted the officers' role in averting what he termed "a very serious threat to our community," while Bondi commended the police work as life-saving. An ongoing investigation is in place, with the D.C. Attorney General's Office presently handling the case. According to a statement obtained by WTOP, over fifty bullets were among the items seized in the raid.
