The Avondale Fire and Medical Department is opening up the floor for registrations to Camp HERo, a program aimed squarely at introducing girls between the ages of 14 and 18 to the world of firefighting. Slated for this upcoming October 6-9, the camp lays out a hands-on experience, fully escorted by the female firefighters of Avondale, to impart essential firefighting skills, fire safety education, and the chance to quickly earn their CPR certification. Avondale's official announcement details the camp schedule that spans over four days, including vital hands-on activities, mentoring and even a final day hosted at Phoenix Raceway to fully round out the training experience.

The initiative, opening up at a time when women hold a mere 5% of the nation's career firefighting positions, aims to potentially shift this demographic by encouraging girls to earnestly consider a path they might not have before. As noted in the official announcement, camp attendees will be privy to exposing themselves to a surprisingly underrepresented career track that they might discover to be both challenging and rewarding. To secure a spot, those interested need to present a completed physical release form, an indication of the hands-on nature of the camp initiatives.

Avondale Fire Chief Larry Rooney is quoted, saying, "We’re excited to give high school girls a chance to challenge themselves and learn about a career they may not have thought about before." Expressing gratitude for the support that allows the camp to go out with a bang, Rooney adds,  “We're especially thankful to Phoenix Raceway for helping us make the last day of camp so memorable,” as noted by the city's announcement.

Capacity is limited. Young women interested in joining are encouraged to sign up quickly. More information on registration for this fall’s Camp HERo is available on Avondale’s website.
