16-year-old rising star Nehemiah Mills has claimed the title of State Champion at the 2025 Division I Track & Field Finals, representing Beechcroft High School. Despite the nerves and a rough start to the day, Mills clocked a stunning 46.86 seconds in the 400-meter dash, snagging the first-place finish and setting a personal best.

Overcoming initial doubts due to his sixth-fastest qualifying time and being seeded in the typically disadvantageous outside lane, Mills managed to outrun the competition. As reported by the Columbus City Schools (CCS) website, Mills said, "It feels good because a lot of people doubt you. But to stand out and win at this school means a lot. Proving people wrong...it felt good."

Mills' work ethic and partnership with his coaching staff have been integral to his success, with head boys track coach Christine Douglas highlighting the importance of communication and preparation. Nehemiah took this collaboration to heart, stating, "I just run my race. You’re only trying to beat your own time," Mills told CCS. His mother, Jewel Romero, echoed the significance of support from the Beechcroft coaching team, emphasizing their role in her son's development both on and off the track.

The high school junior's accomplishment is a beacon for other young, inner-city athletes with aspirations of greatness. Mills himself remains forward-thinking and has set goals to not only improve his times in the 100 and 200 meters but also to break the state record in the 400-meter and aim for the Olympics. "I want to keep training at 110 percent," Mills told CCS.

Mills' victory not only earns him a place in Ohio's track history but also serves as proof that dedication and a strong support network can lead to remarkable achievements. It is a testament to the CCS's commitment to cultivating students who are prepared to lead in all aspects of life. With this win under his belt and two more years at Beechcroft High, Mills has clearly set the stage for an inspiring athletic career.
