This isn't sci-fi; it's the latest real-world application to ensure that people on foot or bikes get more time to cross intersections if needed. Described on the city's Lake to Lake news show, this Safer Signals pilot program is using smart tech to adjust walk signals on the fly, responding to the pace of those crossing the street, as per the City of Bellevue.

Folks at Transportation are testing out this approach at select crossroads, keen on reducing the rush that can lead to accidents. The cameras track the movement of cars, cyclists, and pedestrians, dynamically extending the walk signal when someone's not making it across in standard time. It's a practical solution that recognizes that not everyone moves at the same speed. "Part of a Safer Signals pilot Transportation is testing, computers using LIDAR can make walk signals last longer in real time if someone's walking slow," the city's announcement highlighted.

Bellevue is continuing to make strides in enhancing city life. The recent Bellevue International Festival drew a large and diverse crowd to Crossroads Park, where residents came together to celebrate cultural diversity through food, music, and art. Now in its second year, the festival was highlighted in the city’s Lake to Lake broadcast alongside the Safer Signals program, reflecting Bellevue’s dedication to both community safety and cultural enrichment.

Moving at a different kind of pace, Safe Speeds Bellevue is looking at the bigger picture of traffic movement. The project is exploring options for lowering speed limits on many of the city streets, a nod to the fact that speed has been a consistent factor in traffic incidents.
