The Boston Police Department, in partnership with the Boston Police Foundation and communications titan AT&T, has made a significant contribution to students' educational resources by donating 200 laptops, each equipped with Microsoft Office. As reported by the Boston Police Department’s website, these laptops are intended for distribution among school-age children throughout Boston's diverse neighborhoods. Commissioner Cox emphasized the impact of this initiative during the handover event, which was also attended by the youth who will be benefiting directly from this program.
This gesture is more than just a passing contribution; it reflects a collaborative effort to bridge the digital divide and provide equal opportunities for access to technology and education. The donation event was not just about technology but also about community, with an added touch of fun for the kids, featuring the BPD Ice Cream Truck and Slush Cart.
The recipients of these laptops are spread across multiple police districts and include students who are engaged with various units such as the Crimes Against Children Unit, Youth Violence Strike Force, Homicide Unit, and the Bureau of Community Engagement. These technological tools are not merely for the sake of having gadgets; they are windows and doors to vast expanses of knowledge and keys to unlocking potential that might otherwise remain dormant.
In the words of Commissioner Cox on the Boston Police Department’s website, "Each laptop, loaded with Microsoft Office, is being provided to youth in each police district/neighborhood – as well as to students supported through our Crimes Against Children Unit, Youth Violence Strike Force, Homicide Unit, and the Bureau of Community Engagement." According to the department, the initiative aims to support students’ access to technology. The event included law officers interacting with the students during the distribution.
