Boston Police District E-5 officers rolled up their sleeves and joined community members for the Bill McGregor Street Hockey Event at Fallon Field in Roslindale, marking another initiative to foster police-community relations, according to the Boston Police Department's news release. Beyond overseeing the street hockey games, the officers contributed by directing traffic, ensuring safety, and discussing local issues with residents.
This show of support signifies more than just a one-off engagement, it represents a consistent effort by the BPD to bridge gaps with the people they serve; Captain Michael Hegarty and the E-5 Community Service Office, in particular, have taken an active role in these type of events, they were seen cheering on the athletes and running the BPD Ice Cream Truck to provide a cool treat for the players as noted by the BPD's statement.
The event, named after Bill McGregor, is one of the community outreach programs aiming at strengthening bonds between law enforcement and community members through shared activities and conversations. The gathering, which saw officers engage with young athletes and their families, was made possible through support from the Boston Police Foundation’s COP Fund and local company HP Hood.
