In the predawn stillness of University Place, an attempt at amateur car towing turned into a series of mishaps, culminating in significant property damage. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department blog, on July 30th, a vehicle that had been parked at an AutoZone was involved in a botched towing operation that resulted in it crashing into the front of a Pho and Teriyaki restaurant.
The sequence of events, captured on surveillance video, began with the maroon vehicle's driver informing AutoZone employees that he would return to tow the malfunctioning car. However, it was a white Honda Pilot that arrived in the early hours of the morning, equipped with a dolly and an apparent determination to move the vehicle. Alas, the tow strap failed repeatedly, leading to the vehicle first becoming a runaway threat, then a direct hazard as it collided with the restaurant twice. The Pierce County Sheriff's blog detailed, "Around 5:50am, the driver appears to try and secure the vehicle again for towing, but things get a lot worse from here."
The damage to the restaurant has prompted an investigation as a hit-and-run collision, and the Sheriff's Department is actively seeking information regarding the white Honda Pilot and the female passenger involved in the incident. Local authorities have reached out to the community, asking for any potential leads or recognition of the individuals or vehicle in question to assist in the investigation.
The botched towing attempt ranged from what might be seen as slapstick incompetence to outright recklessness. In the aftermath, the area was left with the tangible proof of the chaos: a car stranded against a retention wall and a local business facing an unexpected renovation. The Sheriff's Department has not yet released estimates on the cost of damages, but the structural integrity of the Pho and Teriyaki restaurant has been compromised due to the collision. Community members who have information pertinent to the hit-and-run are encouraged to contact University Place Deputies. "There is significant damage to the Pho and Teriyaki restaurant," the department noted, signaling the gravity of the situation.
For now, the University Place community is left to ponder the ramifications of inadequate towing practices and the surprising turns that can arise from a simple car malfunction. As the authorities follow leads, the incident remains a clear reminder of the potential consequences when unorthodox methods are employed in the place of professional services.
