Buffalo’s East Side is receiving a major boost with a $53 million renovation of the Milk-Bone manufacturing facility. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the project is already in progress and will include expanded production, new processing equipment, and the addition of 17 full-time positions to the existing 280-member workforce, according to information released by the Governor's office.
The J.M. Smucker Company is investing in the site to meet the demands of the growing billion-dollar pet treat industry, representing one of the largest private sector investments on the city’s East Side. Milk-Bone has operated in the area since 1957. Empire State Development is providing up to $500,000 in tax credits to support the job creation initiative, as stated by ESD President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight, who also noted Milk-Bone’s long-standing presence in Buffalo.
The renovation will also include the addition of a new production line, a state-of-the-art oven, grinder, and cooker, as well as a significant freezer expansion to accommodate increased production. Todd VeRost, Plant Operations Manager at The J.M. Smucker Co. Buffalo Manufacturing Facility, informed officials about the company's role as a major local employer and active member of the Buffalo community.
Funding and incentives from state and local entities, including the New York Power Authority and National Grid, are supporting various parts of the project. These include low-cost hydropower and grants through National Grid's Electric Capital Investment Incentive Program, which will help upgrade a substation critical for packaging line improvements. Ken Kujawa, Regional Director for National Grid, secured a $500,000 grant and highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors. Additional information was shared with state and city officials.
Buffalo Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon and Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz noted the company’s decision as connected to the region’s business environment and workforce. The Milk-Bone plant renovation is expected to impact Buffalo’s economy and maintain the presence of a pet care brand in the city’s manufacturing sector. Invest Buffalo Niagara President and CEO Thomas Kucharski also commented on the project.
