Residents of Burke County are being urged to stay vigilant following reports of a new phone scam. The Burke County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning about fraudsters posing as law enforcement officials. These scammers are targeting locals, demanding money under the guise of covering expenses for inmate-related costs like classes or pre-trial paperwork, according to the county's annoucement.
Unsuspecting individuals are receiving calls claiming that a family member of an inmate needs financial assistance. The Burke County Sheriff's Office has clarified that they do not engage in such practices. "The Burke County Sheriff's Office wants to remind the public that we will never call and request money. Any such requests are fraudulent," the official statement said.
In line with the Sheriff's Office's concerns, local community leaders are urging residents to remain alert. Those who have received these deceptive calls are being advised not to share any personal or financial details. To counteract the spread of this fraudulent activity, residents are being encouraged to report any suspicious calls to the authorities immediately.
