
A 79-year-old Camarillo man was shot by a deputy on July 31, after he called 911, claiming he had killed someone, officials said. The man, who has not been identified, allegedly refused to lay down his firearm when confronted by deputies, leading to the shooting, FOX LA reported.
Members of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office arrived at the man's residence in the 4300 block of Central Avenue in Camarillo around 12:30 p.m., after the emergency call was placed. A dispatcher who kept the line open with the suspect requested him to step outside the house, where he emerged holding the weapon in a "threatening manner." The situation escalated and a deputy shot the 79-year-old, as detailed in a statement obtained by Nixle.
The injured man was given first aid at the scene and subsequently taken to a local hospital for further treatment. The severity of his injuries has not been publicly disclosed. An ensuing search of his home did not uncover any victims, and officials confirmed that no deputies were injured during the incident.
Investigations by the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit is currently active and ongoing. Sergeant Monica Smith of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office stated that this incident is considered isolated, with no continuing threat to the community. No additional information regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting, or the identity of the alleged victim mentioned in the 911 call has been released at this time.
