Cambridge has seen the SHADE project bloom in Sennott Park, a teen-led initiative featuring a multifunctional space aimed at fostering social interactions and mental health support, especially during the sweltering summer months. In this collaboration between youth and professionals, the park now sports a "Halo" light, a beacon turning on at dusk to invite teens into a safe and vibrant environment.
The installation, outlined in a recent statement from the City of Cambridge, was developed with the input of local teens and is backed by several community leaders and educational institutions, including Equity Roadmap, Olin College of Engineering, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Pneuhaus Inflatable Art and Architecture, and buildingways which is not just a platform but an inclusive hub for ideas and innovation, it sets an example of how public spaces can transform to meet community needs.
The hands at the helm include Cambridge-based teen Co-Directors Eli Goncalves, Matt Keane, and Samadhi Simmons, who collectively steer SHADE with passion and purpose. Aiming beyond just a hangout spot, SHADE opens its metaphorical arms to kids and adults alike, creating versatile and intergenerational connections. "SHADE is the place to be if you’re looking for chill vibes, snacks, music and community," Simmons expressed in a statement obtained by the City of Cambridge, "SHADE has so much to offer for not just teens, but children and adults as well. Within the past two years I’ve gotten to see SHADE become a place for everyone. I’ve seen the smiles and laughter when people are around just enjoying our space; it’s truly amazing and I can’t wait for more to come out of SHADE."
Funded by the Public Art for Spatial Justice grant and the Cambridge Community Foundation grant, SHADE stands as a testiment, a testament to community-driven innovation, it brings local youth into conversations about mental health, leisure, and urban design.
