The Canutillo Independent School District will now feature the insights of two of its students in school board meetings, as it aims to amplify student voices in the governance process. The district board recently appointed Moises Aguirre from Northwest Early College High School and Mason Gossett from Canutillo High School as student advisors for the 2025–2026 school year, a move that has garnered attention from educational stakeholders for its progressive step toward inclusive decision-making.
In a recently published article on the district's website, Board President Armando Rodriguez emphasized the importance of including students in the conversation. He stated, "Our students are the heartbeat of this district. By bringing Moises and Mason to the table, we're not just listening to student voices, we’re empowering them to shape the future of Canutillo ISD," as per Canutillo ISD. Both Aguirre and Gossett openly expressed their intent to use this platform to represent their peers and contribute to the district's policy-making process.
Gossett, with ambitions to study sports science or kinesiology, told Canutillo ISD, "I want to be a voice for those students who are more quiet and don’t readily share their concerns." His role as a student advisor will allow him to provide a channel for the less outspoken members of the student community.
Aguirre, who has his sights set on a career in the medical field, aims to gain a deeper understanding of district operations and to keep his peers informed. As obtained by Canutillo ISD, he noted, "I wanted to get involved to really see the inner workings of the district. I look forward to keeping my fellow students, teachers and staff aware of what is happening and bringing their concerns and ideas directly to the Board." Though neither student advisor will possess voting rights, they are to actively participate in discussion and may request to speak before trustees cast their votes, providing an essential student perspective on issues that impact their educational environment directly.
