In an effort to cater to the needs of individuals with heightened sensory sensitivities, Charlotte County Fire & EMS has rolled out a new set of EMS Patient Sensory Assistance Bags across its stations and ALS ambulances. The innovative bags come armed with a suite of tools aimed at alleviating distress for patients with autism spectrum disorder and other sensory challenges during medical emergencies.
The rollout is a concerted endeavor by the Southwest Florida Healthcare Coalition, Golisano Children's Hospital, the SEA STAR Program, and, of course Charlotte County Fire & EMS. According to a statement from Charlotte county, the bags include "Noise-canceling headphones for sound reduction, Sunglasses for light sensitivity, Fidget spinners, pop-its, and tactile brushes for redirection and touch comfort, Chew rings for oral sensory support, A communication board to aid non-verbal interaction."
The inclusion of such resources speaks to a broader movement within healthcare to foster inclusivity and patient-centered care. Representatives from the collaborating organizations believe that these sensory assistance bags provide a crucial bridge in communication and comfort. This is especially important for those who are non-verbal or overwhelmed by the sensory input that can often accompany emergency medical situations. The tools are not just a mere convenience but a vehicle for dignity and understanding in moments where patients are most vulnerable.
