Chicago's O'Hare International Airport embarks on a significant expansion with the groundbreaking of the new Concourse D, an initiative designed to bolster connectivity, economic growth, and the region's competitive advantage in the global stage. Local leaders and government officials have expressed strong support for Concourse D, emphasizing its anticipated benefits for passengers, workers, and the local economy.
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) lauded the project for laying "the foundation for increased connectivity and reliability." He aims to continue working at the federal level to provide resources for Illinois airports, "to keep passengers safe and connected," according to a statement obtained by the City of Chicago. Senator Tammy Duckworth matched the sentiment, calling O'Hare an "economic engine" and the growth a "no-brainer for airlines, flight crews, and passengers alike."
Representatives in Congress also weighed in on the project's significance. Congressman Mike Quigley stressed the importance of moving forward "expeditiously" to keep O’Hare as a leading global airport, while Congresswoman Delia Ramirez highlighted the project's impact on "increased passenger safety, comfort, and dependability." Ald. Matt O’Shea, 19th Ward, pointed to the thousands of well-paying jobs the development will create and the commitment to sustainable economic growth.
At the city level, Phil Clement from World Business Chicago spoke of the project setting a "competitive edge," while Bob Reiter from the Chicago Federation of Labor underscored the importance of the "thousands of good union construction jobs" the project will introduce to the region. Kristen Reynolds from Choose Chicago believes the investment to be a "game-changer" for the city's ability to attract visitors, and Jack Lavin from the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce commended the collective leadership behind the expansion, calling it an investment in the city’s "workforce, and competitiveness."
Voices from the business and hospitality sectors chimed in as well. Derek Douglas, representing the Civic Committee, reflected on how the modernized terminals and infrastructure will unlock new potential for the city. Michael Jacobson, from the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, recognized the expansion as critical for the success and growth of the travel sector. In the construction arena, Jason Kopp of AECOM Hunt highlighted the joint venture's commitment to delivering the concourse that will "elevate the passenger experience at O’Hare for decades to come," while Otto Nichols of Clayco noted the project's significance as a declaration of Chicago's commitment to its global hub status.
As work commences on Concourse D, the collaborative effort between local government, aviation, construction, and civic leaders represents a unified vision for Chicago's role in the global economy and travel industry, setting the stage for continued advancement and prosperity.
