The Chicago Cubs are set to host the 2027 MLB All-Star Game at the historic Wrigley Field, confirmed MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on Friday. This event marks the return of the All-Star Game to Wrigley Field after a 37-year hiatus, with the previous hosting taking place back in 1990. Following a "cryptic email" about a "special announcement" sent out by the Cubs, the news was delivered amidst the presence of local Illinois dignitaries. The announcement has led to an air of anticipation, as both the city and state officials gear up to present the game in a few years' time.
The Ricketts family and the Cubs organization's significant investments into refurbishing Wrigley Field played a crucial role in the decision to bring the All-Star Game back to Chicago. According to ABC7 Chicago, approximately $1 billion has been spent on improvements to both the ballpark and the surrounding Wrigleyville neighborhood. A recent $30 million boost to security enhancements was also cited as a key factor in securing the bid, in a report by WGN-TV.
On hand to celebrate the announcement were numerous city and state leaders, including Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. "This is an honor for our team, our city and our state," Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts told ABC7 Chicago. He further expressed his eagerness to showcase the iconic Wrigley Field to baseball fans worldwide. Likewise, Illinois and Chicago officials have highlighted the economic benefits the All-Star Game is expected to bring, with filled restaurants and hotels, and a week packed with activities.
During the announcement, respect was paid to the late Cubs' Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg, with a moment of silence preceding the event. Coincidentally, Sandberg featured in the 1990 game at Wrigley and even clinched victory in the Home Run Derby the day before the main event. Commissioner Manfred also hinted at the broader impact of the All-Star Game through legacy programs in his statement obtained by ABC7 Chicago, noting that "Major League Baseball and its partners will leave behind a lasting impact on the communities across Chicago." Cubs fans and baseball aficionados alike can now to eagerly anticipate what promises to be a summer highlight in 2027.
