This Saturday, Cincinnati will play host to the Red Bull Flugtag, a unique event that will see teams launch their homemade, human-powered flying machines from a 27-foot flight deck into the Ohio River, according to Cincinnati.com. The competition, returning to the city for the first time since 2023, calls upon amateur aviators and engineers to test their aeronautic creations in front of a crowd of spectators.

More than 30 teams, including the "Flugcats" from the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science, will compete for a variety of prizes including cash, exclusive Red Bull experiences, and the opportunity to meet with Red Bull athletes, the Mayor Aftab Pureval conveyed his pride for Cincinnati hosting international events such as this, expressing, "I am so proud of our city in this moment, as we continue to compete for these international events, whether it be the World Cup or Sundance and now Flugtag," in a statement obtained by WLWT, these teams have come together to celebrate the ingenuity and spirit of flight in a joyful, competitive format that has gained international renown.

Visitors can head to Sawyer Point Park and Yeatman's Cove starting at noon to witness the launches with the first flight ceremony kicking off at 1 p.m. and a concluding award ceremony following the final flight at around 3:45 p.m. The University of Cincinnati News described Flugtag as a German term meaning "flight day," underlining the event's focus on the wonderment of flight made possible through human ingenuity and creativity, sans engines.

For the duration of the event, certain stretches of the Ohio and Licking rivers will be closed to establish a "Safety Zone" between specified mile markers, starting at noon until the event wraps up at 5 p.m., local and federal agencies will be on-site to ensure that spectators and competitors alike are safe, as they rigorously comply with waterway regulations and uphold the spirit of festive aviation, "Recreational water vessels can enter the Safety Zone before noon to watch the Flugtag but must anchor through the end of the festival," WLWT explains, commercial vessels will require permission from the captain of the Port of Ohio Valley to move through the zone during these times.
