A Clark County School District teacher has been arrested on gross misdemeanor charges. Ray Garcia, 42, a PE teacher at Edna F. Hinman Elementary School, is accused of capturing and sharing an inappropriate image. The district’s police department took Garcia into custody following an investigation that began on Tuesday, as reported by News 3 LV.
Details about the image have not been released, but Ray Garcia has been placed on unpaid leave under district contract rules. The Clark County Detention Center confirmed his booking on the charges. According to KTNV, his unpaid leave will remain in place after his release, keeping him out of school duties.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department notified school district police that a recent U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling prohibits the release of booking photos, sparking debate over privacy rights and public interest in suspect identification, as per News 3 LV. The case involves Garcia, who has worked for the Clark County School District since January 2013 and now faces uncertainty in his career following recent events. Officials released limited details but stated that updates will be provided as the investigation continues, as mentioned by 8 News Now.
