In response to the incident, a disaster emergency was declared to rally state resources to support the ensuing response efforts.
In a damning revelation by the inspection, Governor Polis expressed his disgust with Cotter's handling of his duties, as reported by the Colorado Governor's Office. The Governor stated, "I'm sickened for the families of the loved ones who are impacted by this unacceptable misconduct." After public trust was evident to have been lost, Polis added that it's clear Cotter has a need to step down and "should be investigated and if warranted, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” as per the Colorado Governor's Office.
The emergency declaration serves a dual purpose. It not only directs resources to assist with the Pueblo County Coroner's Office and the investigation of the Davis Mortuary but also encourages other counties to offer support.
