Colorado Springs is making a communal push for cleanliness, and they're not going it alone. In an upcoming community effort to spruce up the scenic Pikes Peak Greenway Trail, the City of Colorado Springs, alongside the Trails and Open Space Coalition (TOSC), is rallying folks for a volunteer-based cleanup this Saturday. The initiative, dubbed Keep It Clean COS, is a testament to the collaborative spirit: Government working in tandem with citizens to tackle the waste that blights their public spaces.
On August 23 from 9 a.m. to noon, residents are expected to converge on Monument Valley Park for the Keep It Clean COS event, which promises all the tools necessary for the job, but participants should come prepared with water, pants, and closed-toed shoes. Parking won't be an issue, with available spaces in Monument Valley Park itself and along Mesa Road, as detailed by the City of Colorado Springs.
The initiative has seen a substantial amount of progress. Since its inception in 2023, over 77,950 labor hours have been poured into the city's beautification by way of trash collection. In the current year alone, a staggering 7,890,000 square feet of medians have been cleaned. These numbers don't just hint at improvement; they shout evidence of a community that’s taking charge of its environment.
While the call to action is voluntary, the event is backed by solid sponsorship. Local entities like Cumulus Media, Phil Long Dealerships, and Earthwise Waste Solutions are throwing their support behind the cleanup, providing resources that likely include the pickers, gloves, and trash bags for volunteers. Efforts like these showcase how public-private partnerships can be harnessed to promote not just civic pride but also an enhanced quality of life for all residents.
