Betsy and Dan Santiso's family notably increased in size with the arrival of quintuplets at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, a detail disclosed by various local news outlets. With the quintuplets' birth, the couple's family jumped from a trio to an octet overnight. Betsy Santiso reported feeling "surprisingly good" despite the considerable addition to the family, according to an interview with NBC4i.
The three boys, Cedar, Linden, and Alder, alongside their sister Juniper and brother Torrey, were all delivered within minutes of each other and are being cared for in the NICU of Riverside Methodist, as mentioned in a news release from OhioHealth relayed by cleveland.com. The entire process was orchestrated by a dedicated medical team that prepared through simulations and incorporated staff from various disciplines. "Each baby had a team of four or five associates," said administrative nurse manager for labor and delivery at Riverside Methodist, Carrie Aurin, in a statement obtained by NBC4i.
The medical rarity of quintuplets meant that the hospital staff saw it as a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," according to Eric Liming, program manager for NICU at Nationwide Children's Hospital, who NBC4i quoted. The delivery event has not occurred there in over a decade. While discussing the unique occurrence, Betsey Santiso expressed to NBC4i the overwhelm and joy of meeting their new children and the precious moments of one-on-one time despite the logistics of caring for quintuplets.
Reflecting on the unexpected twist in their fertility journey, and considering Betsey's medical history, the couple was initially told the likelihood of multiples was slim. "We knew there is an increased chance of multiples, but considering my medical history, they were like it probably won't happen, and it really happened," Betsy elaborated to NBC4i. The babies' names, all inspired by different types of trees, holds a connection to nature, and a recent emotional backdrop for the family includes the loss of both parents' fathers, adding significance to the event. Dan Santiso expressed his admiration for Betsy's "grace and her trust" through the process during an interview with Spectrum News 1.
