A hip-hop subgenre built entirely on geek culture is setting up camp in Old North Columbus this weekend. Nerdcore Summer Camp takes over Spacebar on Saturday, bringing together rappers from across the country who write songs about video games, anime, Dungeons & Dragons and Pokémon, all wrapped in a scavenger-hunt, campfire-story format designed to feel more like a reunion than a concert.
The event was conceived by Lex the Lexicon Artist, who reached out to Columbus performer and event promoter Ryan Francis with the idea, according to The Columbus Dispatch. Francis, 40, performs under the name Huge Euge and has partnered with Lex to plan and publicize the show. “Songs about computers, video games, anime, Dungeons & Dragons, Pokémon, pop culture and nostalgia are very heavy in the nerdcore scene,” Francis said, per the Dispatch's reporting.
Nerdcore itself dates back to 2000, when rapper MC Frontalot coined the term with his song Nerdcore Hiphop, giving a formal name to a DIY subgenre that had been circulating through early file-sharing communities, according to Engadget. Two decades later, the genre has grown into a touring circuit with its own veterans, and Nerdcore Summer Camp is explicitly modeled on Florida's Nerdapalooza, the multi-genre geek music festival that ran annually in Orlando from 2007 until it folded in October 2013, per the Dispatch.
Who's Playing at Spacebar
The Saturday lineup includes Lex the Lexicon Artist, Huge Euge, Schäffer the Darklord, Ax & AJB, Swell Rell, Nofriends, D&D Sluggers, Super Smack and Ohm-I, as well as Mayor Wertz and Prowess The Testament, the Dispatch reports. Francis and Prowess previously recorded a song together about Super Mario's Princess Peach, while Mayor Wertz is known for records about parenthood.
Prowess The Testament, a Washington, D.C.-based emcee who got her stage name from hip-hop veteran KRS-One, released a 20-track Sailor Moon-inspired concept album called Legend of the Moon: Deluxe in May 2025, fusing boom-bap production with anime storytelling, according to the SXSW schedule's artist profile. Schäffer the Darklord, the New York City rapper born Mark Shaffer, brings nine studio albums of dark comedy and heavy metal-inflected hip-hop, and he co-founded the touring nerdcore supergroup Four-Eyed Horsemen alongside MC Lars, Mega Ran and MC Frontalot, per The Bur Oak.
Filipino-American rapper Super Smack, billed as the Nintendo Switch of Rappers for his red-and-blue Joy-Con visual branding, released his Kickstarter-funded debut album BOOTY & THE BRAIN in 2023 and pairs pop-rap with choreographed dance routines, according to The Boston Calendar's event listing. North Carolina duo D&D Sluggers, who blend chiptune beats with punk-rap, previously collaborated with Mega Ran on his 2015 track Infinite Lives and toured with Dead Milkmen guitarist Joe Jack Talcum in 2016, per Connect Savannah.
Camp Games, Scavenger Hunts and a Secret Show
True to its summer-camp branding, the event weaves in fan interaction alongside the music. Organizers built the day around team-based scavenger hunts, with attendees wearing colored wristbands and filling out scorecards to complete social icebreaker challenges meant to get fans and artists mingling in a low-pressure setting, according to Out Of The Blue Magazine. The Dispatch adds that the night will also include games and ghost stories around a fire, and Francis said the event will be, in his words, chock-full of fan interactions.
VIP ticket holders get an extra layer of exclusivity. Beyond a 21-and-up preshow party, VIP tickets include access to a private concert at a secret Columbus location the evening before the main show, on Friday, with undisclosed artists performing and organizers intentionally keeping the guest list small to preserve an intimate atmosphere, per Out Of The Blue's coverage. The location and timing for that preshow party will be emailed directly to VIP ticketholders ahead of the event, according to the Dispatch.
Tickets and What Comes Next
Nerdcore Summer Camp is open only to attendees 18 and older. Standard general admission runs $31.60, while VIP tickets cost $41.80, and both are available at bit.ly/4hl35t7, per the Dispatch's reporting. The show kicks off at 5 p.m. Saturday at Spacebar, 2590 N. High St.
Spacebar itself has been a fixture of Old North Columbus's independent music scene since 2014, hosting rock, metal, punk and hip-hop acts in a 200-capacity room, according to 614NOW. Organizers are pitching the event to newcomers as well as longtime nerdcore fans, and the Dispatch reports Nerdcore Summer Camp is planned as the first of many shows, suggesting Francis and Lex the Lexicon Artist see Saturday's gathering as a starting point rather than a one-off.
