The Columbus Division of Police has reported the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Thomas Smith, which occurred in mid-August. According to a social media update from the Columbus Division of Police, Joshua Bays was taken into custody yesterday, following an incident that left Smith with a fatal gunshot wound earlier in the month.
Officers initially responded to a call on August 14 at approximately 1:42 p.m., finding Smith unresponsive at the 1200 block of W. Broad St., as described by the Columbus Division of Police, he had sustained a gunshot and was taken to an area hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries three days later on August 17, Joshua Bays was subsequently identified in connection with the incident and arrested by Columbus Police SWAT without incident according to the department's post.
Smith, who was 56 years old at the time of the shooting, received immediate medical attention following the event but ultimately did not survive, prompting an investigation that led to the identification and arrest of Bays, a process detailed in the police's public communications.
