A somber mood lingers over Coney Island as the community grapples with another tragic drowning incident that claimed the life of a young man. According to the NYPD, the 18-year-old victim was discovered unconscious in the waters near the famous Coney Island Boardwalk this past Wednesday, an incident first reported by Gothamist.
In a distressing pattern, that marks at least the third drowning this summer, the teenager's body was pulled from the sea by a lifeguard before being rushed to Coney Island Hospital. Despite the efforts of the first responders,, he was pronounced dead upon arrival, his name withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The recent incident echoes a sorrowful note to an already tough season for water safety. A separate report by The Daily News highlighted drownings just weeks apart, including the death of a 23-year-old immigrant and a 37-year-old former lifeguard, emphasizing the unpredictable and often perilous nature of the city's waters.
Authorities remind the public about city regulations prohibiting swimming during thunderstorms, and after lifeguards have gone off duty at 6 p.m., rules underscored by the somber findings of bodies off Rockaway Beach on separate occasions this season. The 23-year-old man, "a recent immigrant from Africa," disappeared under foreboding storm clouds, in a grim sequence that follows the loss of Jimmy Rambally, who vanished during a late-night swim, according to statements made to The News by his brother. Despite his swimming abilities and lifeguard experience, the temptation of the sea at night claimed Rambally's life.
