On a visit to the El Paso Animal Services main shelter, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar revealed her latest legislative effort, the Supporting Our Shelters Act. Aiming to amend the existing Animal Welfare Act, this new bill seeks to funnel crucial grant funding to local animal shelters across the nation. It's a strategic move to ensure these shelters have ample resources to care for animals, promote adoptions, and elevate the living conditions for pets in transition to their permanent homes.

“Local animal shelters are lifelines for communities, providing safety and care for vulnerable animals while helping families find beloved companions," Congresswoman Veronica Escobar stated. “But too often, these shelters are stretched thin, underfunded, and overwhelmed. The Supporting Our Shelters Act invests directly in them so they can continue their vital work with the resources they deserve.” Acknowledging the move, City Manager Dionne Mack expressed appreciation for any federal push supporting the operations of local animal shelters and the well-being of the community’s pets.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has also thrown its support behind the bill. "Right now, shelters and rescues from coast to coast are under intense strain, often at capacity and stretching every dollar to provide quality care and services to the communities and animals they support," voiced Maggie Garrett, vice president of federal affairs for the ASPCA. According to a statement published on Congresswoman Escobar's website, "The Supporting Our Shelters Act would establish a grant program to provide federal resources to shelters across the country." This act of legislative commitment seeks to ensure that shelters continue the crucial and lifesaving service to their communities, enhance safety net services, and mitigate animal homelessness.

Congresswoman Escobar's advocacy for animals isn't newfound. In fact, back in December 2022, her efforts secured $1.3 million for the El Paso County Animal Welfare Pet Wellness Clinic, projecting to renovate a property into a facility that provides high-volume spay and neuter programs, vaccinations, and microchips for tracking responsible pet ownership.
