Coon Rapids residents and travelers, brace yourselves for a major traffic shift this weekend as MnDOT's Hwy 10 expansion project hits a new phase. Per the social media post from City of Coon Rapids, MN - Local Government, eastbound traffic on Hwy 10 will be relegated to a single lane from Round Lake Blvd. to Hanson Blvd. starting 11 p.m. on August 22, stretching through to 5 a.m. August 25. "When the eastbound traffic shift is completed Monday morning, Aug. 25, there will be two lanes of traffic in the eastbound direction," the local government detailed.
But that's not the end, the westward trails will be next on the lane-reduction chopping block, from 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, to noon the following day. This will also lead to temporary ramp closures, which can cause up to three hours of additional travel headaches for trips involving Main St. and Hanson Blvd. With the completion on Tuesday, Aug. 26, two lanes will flow on the inside lanes of the westbound highway.
The shakeup extends to early Saturday morning, Aug. 23, when crews will dismantle the concrete barrier dividing through and local lanes on eastbound Hwy 10 – expect intermittent stops in traffic from 1:30-5 a.m. Sunup on August 24 brings more disruptions with ramp closures at Round Lake Blvd. and access points to and from Main St. and Hanson Blvd., stretching until 5 a.m. Monday. "During the ramp closures, motorists should use alternate routes," the local government advises.
Moreover, the loop ramp from southbound Round Lake Blvd. to eastbound Hwy 10 remains shut until mid-October. While two lanes remain operable in both directions for the duration of the project, closures of ramps at Round Lake Blvd., Main St., and Hanson Blvd. will occur sporadically over the construction season. "The majority of work will be complete by mid-October, but crews will return next spring to place a thin coat of blacktop and restripe the roadway. Next year's work is anticipated to be complete by late May 2026," the City of Coon Rapids communicated.
Commuters should prepare for longer travel times, planning their routes with tools like 511. The City of Coon Rapids officials appreciate the public's patience during this construction: "We appreciate your patience while we make these improvements. Plan ahead by checking 511, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination." Remember, all stated construction activities and the resultant traffic issues are contingent on the whims of weather and scheduling, and are liable to shift as such conditions dictate.
